Marieke and I first met over 6 years ago, when she and my man, Daniel were at the peak of their internet geek. They were the creme de la creme of Aussie bloggers, back then, comprising of a rare clique purely reserved for intellectual nerds of words and images. Buzzwords such as Sartorialist, or model/blogger or cobrasnake or selby were far from the everyday vernacular, hell facebook wasn’t even around. Back then it was Boudist and Reasons You Will Hate Me, Marieke’s blog was part of the Australian blogging royalty. Have a look at her last blog, posted in 2008, she has 383 comments, many of them begging her to blog again.
Anyway, I’ve known her for years, we lived together for a while, I’ve photographed her a dozen times, she and Robbie and The Dr opened my first solo show LOUDlight, and I fell in love with her dog Bob Ellis, who has featured in many a shoots of mine.
Here is my latest shoot with Marieke, for the cover story of Sunday Life. We had a great time. It’s always interesting photographing your friends. Hyper sensitive to them, aware of their every move and squirm, wanting to make it as painless and fun as possible, but also knowing that you can probably ask a little more out of them than a subject who you met 10 minutes before the start of the shoot. Marieke and I both wanted to make this hot, (but amenable enough for a cover) so we naturally tuned into all things burlesque and pin-up, a clear aesthetic code Marieke has adhered to for years. Anyway, enjoy!

My dear friend Sarah Oakes has moved over from editing Cleo to Sunday Life. She introduced me to the Cleo world a few years ago, and now has opened the doors to Sunday Life. Thank you Sarah! So, my first assignment was a cover shoot of the wonderful Miss Matilda Brown, and here is the result. The story is about kids in their 20s reluctant to leave the safety and comfort of home. So, we (art director Aleks Beare and I) decided to focus on the youthful side of Matilda, picking and choosing the more playful clothes stylist Jolyon brought in. I wanted to portray her as cute, cheeky, playful, without turning it into a Lolita-type affair, not sexualising the basic concept of youth. We got some pre-school chairs in, and, as Matilda is the effervescent bubble that she is, she happy clambered all over them, using her innate acting sensibility, creating a story within such a simple setup. So here they are! I have another top secret cover shoot coming up, featuring another buddy of mine, can’t wait!

Check out the photography of Joel Peter Witkin. He uses cadavers to create darkly imaginative images which, once you look past the macabre spectacle, are just magical.
Witkin claims that his vision and sensibility were initiated by an episode he witnessed when he was just a small child, a car accident that occurred in front of his house in which a little girl was decapitated.
“I could see something rolling from one of the overturned cars. It stopped at the curb where I stood. It was the head of a little girl. I bent down to touch the face, to speak to it — but before I could touch it someone carried me away.”
